For English speakers — Why is this tricky?

English tip

In English, you often use "although," "even though," "but," "while," "whereas" and they can feel interchangeable. In French, the distinction is much stricter and teachers will mark you down for confusing them.

Think of it this way:

🌧️ Concession = "Although / Even though / Despite"
→ There's an OBSTACLE that SHOULD have stopped the action… but it didn't. The result is surprising.
"Although it was raining, they played outside." — Surprising! The rain should have stopped them.
French: "Il pleuvait, pourtant ils ont joué dehors."
🔄 Opposition = "Whereas / While / On the other hand"
→ You're simply CONTRASTING two different facts. No surprise, no obstacle. Just a neutral comparison.
"He likes jazz, whereas she prefers rock." — No surprise here, just two different tastes.
French: "Il aime le jazz, tandis qu'elle préfère le rock."

🔑 Quick test: Ask yourself → "Is the second part of the sentence surprising given the first?"
If YES → Concession  |  If NO, just different → Opposition

"Malgré la pluie, je suis sorti." → Despite the rain, I went out.

On contraste deux faits différents sans lien cause-effet. Simple comparaison neutre.

"Il aime le jazz, tandis qu'elle préfère le rock." → He likes jazz, whereas she prefers rock.

⚠️ Common mistakes for English speakers

❌ Fréquente erreur
"while" in English can mean BOTH!
"While it was raining, they played" → could be simultaneous action OR concession.
In French, you must choose: alors qu' (opposition) vs bien que (concession).
✅ Bonne approche
Ask: is it surprising?
"He studies while listening to music" → simultaneous, not surprising → use alors qu'il écoute.
"He passed even though he never studied" → surprising! → bien qu'il n'ait jamais étudié.
❌ Piège grammatical
English speakers often write:
❌ "Bien que il est fatiguée..."
Forgetting that bien que requires the SUBJUNCTIVE, not the indicative.
✅ Règle à retenir
bien que / quoique → toujours + subjonctif
✓ "Bien qu'il soit fatigué..."
malgré → toujours + nom (pas de verbe !)
✓ "Malgré la fatigue..."

Identifiez le type logique — identify the logical type in each sentence.

1 Il pleuvait, pourtant ils ont joué dehors.
→ It was raining, yet they played outside.
2 Il aime la lecture, tandis que sa sœur préfère les jeux vidéo.
→ He likes reading, whereas his sister prefers video games.
3 Malgré la fatigue, elle continue à travailler.
→ Despite the fatigue, she keeps working.
4 Mon frère adore le sport, alors que moi, je préfère lire.
→ My brother loves sport, whereas I prefer reading.
5 Bien qu'il soit malade, il est venu au cours.
→ Although he was sick, he came to class.
6 Paris est cher, en revanche Lyon est plus abordable.
→ Paris is expensive; on the other hand, Lyon is more affordable.

→ She works a lot, whereas he does almost nothing. (neutral contrast)

→ Despite his lateness, he was accepted on the team. (hint: needs a NOUN after it)
5 Les enfants aiment le sucre, ______ les médecins le déconseillent.
→ Kids love sugar, even though doctors advise against it. (obstacle = doctors' advice)
